News and Notes:

2025:

  • Notes from Chapter Meeting, April 28, 2025:
    • At least 500 university presidents have signed onto the AAC&U Statement “A Call for Constructive Engagement“, but no SEC members have.
    • The AAUP agrees to recommend that the Faculty Council sign onto the Big 10 Mutual Defense Contract; it aligns with our AAU status and mission.
    • There is much concern about cancelled visas for international students and faculty, cancelled grants, and censorship of research. LiUNA (the Laborer’s Union Local 955) and MU AAUP have issued a statement on Executive Order 51, which outlines MU’s response to ICE on campus.
    • Related, but focusing on our campus, was a discussion about faculty responsibility and oversight of the curriculum, and the concern that the CRRs are not being followed.
  • February Chapter Meeting notes: We planned what topics to bring up at the April General Faculty Meeting and questions to ask at our ongoing meetings with the Provost. Faculty were concerned about how the federal funding freeze and restrictions on DEI-related words that can be no longer be used in federal grants will affect tenure and promotion requirements as well as research and teaching more broadly; there were also concerns raised about ICE interacting with students, faculty, or staff on campus, and student and work visas.
  • February: MU is party to a lawsuit through the APLU challenging the 15% cap on indirect costs on NIH grants.
